Best part time jobs for retired people.

18.03.2025 | Insights

One of the nice things about being retired is that you don’t have to stop working if you don’t want to. It could also be that you’d like a bit of extra cash, would welcome the chance to get out more and interact with people, or you just miss having something constructive to occupy your time.

And aren’t we constantly reminded that staying active, both physically and mentally, is good for us at any age? So, what about a part time job? If the thought appeals to you, we have a handful of suggestions to offer.

Best part time jobs for retired people

Tutoring

Could you tutor a child, a young person or an adult in a subject that you have some expertise in? If you have qualifications in some area, think how rewarding it would be to pass on your knowledge and see someone develop a skill to enrich their life experience.

As a private tutor you can earn on average around £20 – £40 per hour, and it’s entirely up to you how many hours a week you want to work.

A number of websites have opportunities for tutors to register and discover how they can get started. You could try companies such as Tutorful or Superprof where countless numbers of students are just waiting to learn from you.

Dog walking

So many people have a dog that needs walking, but lack the time to do it themselves. Could you step in and help? Dog walking is a win-win part time job however you look at it. It’s a great way of being outdoors and enjoying some exercise. You can do it when you want to. You’ll have the company of furry friends who also love getting out and about. And you’re being paid to do it.

How to start? A card in your local vet’s office is one way. Post a simple flyer through local doors. Or use a website that specialises in finding dog walkers such as Tailster.

A shop assistant in retail

Being retired, it’s possible to feel that you’ve become disconnected from the everyday world and people around you.

To reconnect, you might consider a part-time, customer facing role in a local retail store, a clothes shop, a favourite café or a furniture outlet – whatever feels right for you.

It needn’t be permanent; you could just help out at busy seasonal times, and you’ll be earning extra cash, making new friends, enjoying staff discounts and being an active part of everyday life in your community.

Sell homemade crafts online

You may already be aware of the huge market for handmade items from small businesses and independent sellers, so perhaps you could become part of this trend and earn some extra money from your arts and crafts skills?

What you might have thought of as just a hobby could have the potential to become an enjoyable route to starting your own little business.

For inspiration and to see what’s possible, you might take a look at Etsy where so many thriving businesses have set up their own online shops.

Consulting

After spending your working life as a corporate professional, you’ve probably acquired a great deal of knowledge and experience in a particular field. If so, you could use your specialist skills to help other businesses as a part-time consultant, rather than them needing to hire extra full-time staff.

For instance, they might need help to manage their finances, developing their IT abilities, with design and creative services, or a whole range of areas that your skills could cover.

You could advertise your services online, or find freelance openings with websites like Guru and Upwork.
