Simply put, it’s all about making the most of life with a positive mental attitude as we get older, whatever we’re experiencing or the challenges we might face.
The overall effect of a positive ageing strategy can make all the difference to our emotional, physical and mental wellbeing at any age.
One of the most important differences it can make in later life is to change our negative beliefs about ageing, simply as an inevitable decline in our mental and physical abilities.
By increasing the level at which we choose to become actively engaged in life, a positive ageing approach can help us remain healthier and generally more resilient.
The underlying factor at the heart of positive ageing is to maintain an optimistic and resilient mindset, regardless of challenges or setbacks. To be adaptable and look upon change not as a problem but as a chance to experience something new.
Positive ageing is also about living our life as a continuous journey of self-discovery and learning; of being confident that you can handle whatever comes along. A sense of humour helps too.
Valuing and cultivating worthwhile social relationships are key ingredients for boosting physical and emotional wellbeing.
Equally important is to maintain mobility, strength, and overall wellness through a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a sensible diet, and preventive care.
Decide not to fight the ageing process by viewing it as something to be overcome, resisted or ashamed of.
Don’t dwell on the things you can’t do that perhaps you once could because you’re ‘too old’. Value instead the unique perspectives and wisdoms that come with age.
Look at it as a perfectly natural process that presents new opportunities to experience events as the person you are now.
Realise that you are not who you used to be because, as the unique sum of all your experiences, you’re so much more. In no way are you any less valuable as a human being than you ever were.
