Perhaps the best way to think about downsizing without downgrading your home is to see it as an opportunity to upgrade in quality with a reduction in unnecessary quantity.
Just some of the advantages possible by downsizing are that it can enable you to free up equity in your current home and put more money towards your retirement. It means you can eliminate clutter and keep only what you really want. It also means you can move closer to family or to a better location. And of course, smaller homes need less maintenance, leaving you more time to do what you really want.
Simply put, it’s moving to a smaller home, and there are a number of good reasons for doing that. Perhaps you upsized a previous home to accommodate a growing family, but since the kids moved out you find yourself ‘rattling around’ in a place that’s bigger than you actually need.
Not only do bigger houses need more maintenance and upkeep, there’s more cleaning to do. Perhaps you don’t actually use the extra rooms anyway. And then there’s the additional cost of heating them.
Rather than spending time, money and energy on all of that unused or little used extra space, you could simply downsize and enjoy a more fulfilling lifestyle.
It often seems that we acquire ever more ‘stuff’ simply to fill out what would otherwise be empty spaces in our home.
Some of these things we might have felt we needed at the time, but many are now surplus to requirements. Perhaps they’re just stored away, out of sight and out of mind.
As already mentioned, there are also the financial advantages of downsizing. It’s possible that it will mean you can reduce your mortgage payments, or even become mortgage free, in which case you could release some equity.

One of the nice things about being retired is that you don’t have to stop working if you don’t want to. It could also be that you’d like a bit of extra cash, would welcome the chance to get out more and interact with people, or you just miss having something constructive to occupy your
